Ed Shepard, 88, waits for customers at his downtown gas station in Welch, W.Va. He has owned the place for 62 years and thinks the end is near for his shop. "I only had one customer today, and that's not going to pay the bills," he said. "This used to be a boom town. It's so sad to see what's happened to this city," he added. Welch is the seat of McDowell County, population 22,000, down almost 100,000 in 1950. Most of the businesses in downtown Welch are shuttered. McDowell County is the poorest in the state and one of the poorest in the country.

gingers
It is ginger season. I am kind of missing digging that ginger out of the ground. Not missing washing it - especially when I got bit by a centipede that was stuck in the garbage bag I was wearing at the time.
note: garbage bags are the only suitable wearing material for ginger-washing.
I am enjoying eating the shit out of ginger still. I am attempting to make my own ginger wine and am currently on batch two (hopefully this one is palatable). But Green River Ambrosia is doing it well with their Ginger Libation.
Also, Maine is dishing out some awesome ginger brews of the non-alcoholic variety
And Bklyn Larder is making some amazing ginger molasses cookies. Basically, I like any ginger product in which you can feel the burn and their cookies actually did that - impressive.
Anyway, here is some fun from the farm I worked on last ginger season in Kauai
mamma shama begging for bugs along some yellow ginger

the farm from an aeroplane (plenty more rows to harvest)
